When logging out of GR, an advert pops up saying basically see if my house is there in 1901. Well, i've tried it, but it doesn't come up. Is there a magic way of doing this.
I've tried an address that is definitely on the 1901 census and that didn't come up either.
Any ideas anyone?

You can do an address search on 1901 census on the 'official' 1901 census website....google for the link

Be very wary about anything which presents itself as a pop-up................

dont bother!! its another way of them trying to get you to buy units to search the 1901 census.

ps as reggie says the "official" 1901 is on National archives site. you have to pay to view those results too but you can search by address

Thought i'd give it a try. Didn't realise I could do an address search on the 1901. Will give it a whirl.

That annoying advert has been on this site for months.

Unless you research your house and find out how many times the property has been renumbered over the years it is a waste of time.

I did a lot of research for one GR member on road just 100 yards from where I live. Number 54 in 1901 was demolished in 1902 but there is still a no54 because the road had been renumbered.

As already said it is to catch members out and hope they buy credits.

Thought i'd try it because we've paid up our mortgage and now have the deeds. Info in them takes me back to 1914, but another bit of info says built circa 1880, so I was hoping to check, mainly out of curiosity.
The house numbers on my block haven't been changed down the years, same as they ever was.
Claire, that sounds the long way round, nothing is easy is it.

What I always found really odd was that my late grandma's house (originally bought by her husband's mother) had a completely different street name in 1913 when it was purchased to what it has now. (I think the current name must date at least from the 1940s as my mum never said it was called anything else, but that could be very confusing if you were from outside the area and trying to locate an ancestor's house.

1901 census is only searchable by address on National Archives which is a pay to view.

1881 can be searched for free

1891, 1871, 1861 and 1841 are on Findmypast which is a pay to view

Or take the long route on Ancestry - select year then county then town and then look at enumeration districts.
