don't like it at all, you can no longer create family tree books without uploading it to ancestry press website and then ancestry charges you to have it printed out into a book form (which yes does look nice), but I do not want to upload my tree and all it's information onto their website.

I think i may actually look at other family tree programs now. I am highly disappointed.

I've also received mine now, installed it and have to be honest, prefer the old one, dont lke the layout of thlis one and it takes forever to load up

but i'll persevere and keep using it

i still have my old version on my computer also and it does not overwrite the files

Well, Ive received mine, put it on and cant see anything that is new, exciting and an improvement yet guys. I cant make head nor tail of it yet. Will keep you updated.

The much vaunted map of your ancestors origins has US place names as defaults and appears to require you to go through every place name ticking or changing it - yikes.

Release note from TWR

"The publishers of Family Tree Maker 2008 UK Edition have labelled the pack "Upgrade", but please be assured that the CD is the full version of the program including Service Patch 1.

If you are already using Family Tree Maker, please install 2008, then import your family file.Family Tree Maker 2008 will install itself completely separately from any previous version. It is recommended that you keep your old version installed while you are becoming familiar with 2008.

FTM 2008 has been totally rewritten so please be prepared for a new learning experience.

In contrast to previous versions, the publishers have announced that they intend to release free download update patches that should be advised to you automatically (or go to the Help menu and Check For Update). The program is being continually developed with more features being released over the coming months. For example Service Patch 2 is expected to be released in October 2007.

If you have not already done so, please read our detailed description of the Family Tree Maker 2008 UK Edition on our website"

Heather Report 20 Sep 2007 19:46

Steph, Ive spoken to twr and they feel that the UK version will be better than the beta/USA version and that ancestry have taken on board all the probs and complaints and are hard at it sorting it out.

I still think I shall keep my FTM2006 running on my puter separately as I like my homepage internet facility and that isnt with the 2008 - they encourage you to add an online tree to the ancestry site instead.

Tralena, you must have the US version that came out earlier than the UK one.

Ron Report 18 Sep 2007 11:03

We Beta Tested the 2008 version and we have reveived our free copy of the program for doing that, it's not on general release in the U.K. yet, I guess we are one of the few in the U.K. to have the official release.

I read a comment that 2008 will overwrite any previous version of FTM, this is not correct, unlike all other previous versions it DOES NOT overwrite any previous version, it installs itself in a completely different directory and you can run 2008 and any previous version of FTM separatley.

I personally wouldn't bother buying it, we have never known a program be released onto the market that is so nowhere near complete, there is only one tree available and that does not work properly, there is already an update for it and more are promised and these are very much needed.

It's a completely new program, it looks and works completely different to any other version of FTM and it wants to do is to log you onto Ancestry if you try and register it.

It appears that it has been released early so that they can get the Dollars rolling in from sales, we belong to a few mailing lists that specialise in FTM and good words for 2008 are few and far between.

I think I saw a post from Ron who owns GenealogyPrinters saying he had tested FTM2008 and wasn't sure about it as it was so different from the previous versions.

Ron uses most of the different family tree software there is about so he should know what he's talking about.

It's probably very good for someone who hasn't used the older versions, but if you are like me and don't like change, then maybe not for you.

I had mine on order, it arrived in August...I have found it easy to use and quick to learn with excellent visual instructions on DVD.

I couldn't tell you if the 2008 is better or worse than previous ones as this is my first time using it.

I surpose its 'each to their own'.

There wasnt a 2007 was there? Just V16 upgrade to 2006. How come they are charging more on ebay than their own site - Id ask them that if I were you!!!

Steph, nip over to Family Tree Forum and see what has been said on there by someone who tested the 2008 and has already received a complimentary copy of it :( not good.
