I need a little help .
I have just gone to print part of a Descendants Tree and I'm getting a number in each box with the descendants name,

It's a differnt number for each person.

I've never had this before and can't find how to get rid of the number.

Grateful for any tips. Maggie

Peter

Sounds as though you might have reference numbers for individuals turned on.

You can turn them off by going to File/preferences/reference numbers.

Or you could try right clicking on the descendant chart preview and going to "items to include in each box..." you might find that reference numbers are listed to be included in each box. You can easily remove them.

Hope it helps

You can turn off reference numbers as already stated but some numbers you cannot get rid of and that's when there are duplicates in the tree, FTM will duplicate a persons box if they are intermarried for example and it will assign a reference number, John Smith 1 for example, that means there is another John Smith on the tree who is the same person and will also have a number 1 in his box. Once on the tree as the son of a couple and again on the tree elsewhere as the husband of a daughter.

Thanks for your reply and help, but I still can't get rid of the numbers.
It's not the Ref Number, as I found how to do that. The numbers start at 1 and go in sequence along the lines of the family tree. The names don't always have the same number eg
[93] Peggy Deval
1925-2001

[27] Peggy Deval
1925-2001

It's the number in the brackets I can't seem to get rid of. I've had this 2006 Tree maker for about a year and this is the first time it's printed with the number in the box of the descendant.

Any more ideas. Maggie

In the example that you have given, do you have Peggy Deval turning up more than once on the tree / report? And if so with the same relationships or different ones?

If so, it sounds that for some reason you have managed to duplicate relationships several times.

How many people are affected? Is it just the odd one or is it affecting lots of them?

Hello Peter,

This [No] only comes up on one particular family descendant tree. WILLIAM LAND 1775-1830.
He is the oldest in that line.(I have older Ancesters in other trees)
He doesn't have a number.

Nor does his son Thomas Land 1796.
Then the {No] start.

Then everyone in that tree has a [No} even their partners.

The [No] is different, depending where I start in the LAND Tree

The [No] appears on William's grandson Thomas Land 1824, Yet when I start the Descendant tree from his wife Amelia Clark 1824, the [No] is no longer any where in the descendant tree.

I'm off to work in a little while, so when I come back this evening and the Granchildren are in bed, I might try taking the the 3 Oldest LAND's off the tree and re introduce them and see what happens.

This [No} only appears in this tree and not on any other Trees that I've printed off.

Anything printed from William Land 1855 has NOT got the [No} in front.

It's just the 1st three generations of the Land Descendant Tree brings up the [No]

I can't see that I've done anything different for this LAND tree.

I was going into everything to see if I'd TICKED a wrong box. Never got to bed til 3.00 this morning.

Perhaps you may have an idea what it is,

Sorry it's all a bit long winded.

Thanks, Maggie

Yes, this does look as though you have some duplication with the Land family, especially as the tree starting with Amelia Clark appears ok.

The duplication is not that you heave entered a person again, but that you have married them off to each other more than once. This is something that happened to me a few times until I got used to the way the program works.

Without actually seeing your tree is is difficult to pinpoint the exact error but one thing you could do is to check that you haven't repeated a relationship link. Select each of the people who are causing the problem in turn and click on the Spouse button. Make sure that each spouse only appears the once in the window that opens. If you have the person listed twice, then select and remove the duplicate using the "Fix Relationship" option.

The other time this can occur, quite correctly, is where you have cousins marrying, which gives you two separate trees down from the common ancestor. It can also happen where you have two siblings marrying two other siblings. Depending on the complexity of the tree it might be necessary for the reporting program to repeat one or more persons on different parts of the layout, in which case they will be given Nos.

The numbers will be different for different tree start points as they are generated by the report program, not held anywhere as data.

Hello Peter,

Yes I've finally cracked it. on William Land 1775 and Thomas Land 1824 it was showings 2 Spouses which is strange as I only had one wife for each of them.
When I looked in the Spouse Box, it had SPOUSELESS RELATIONSHIP 1, for both of them. This would not delete, even taking the real wife away and entering her name in the Spouseless Relationship box still didn't remove it.

I completely removed the 3 oldest generations and all their relatives, and 3 times it connected to the BERRY side of the family in 1723. This is my side of the family.

The Land side is my Hubby's

Yet no where as I went through each family did it show that I had connected them.

So it seems if Spouseless Relationship appears in the box, the Descendant printing boxes will come out with a [No].

Thank you very much for your time and information.
it was so nice to know someone was there.

Many thanks, Maggie
