Hi Alison, I cannot find a definate answer, but it does appear to be connected to the textile industry, so could be a yarn winder. |

My husband has just seen it on a sign in Hebden Bridge. That's what he questioned. Whether it was a spelling mistake. |

The first machine in making yarn is the carding machine and I am almost sure that I've heard hubby refer to a "sliver" of fibre when it is passing through that machine. |
