Hi

Anyway when we got to Plumstead we could not find the cemetary, does anybody know where it is, what road it is on as our sat nav wouldn't find it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

my sis and her hubby are buried in Plumstead cemetary. Greenwich Borough Council are absolute gems with info for all the municipal cemetarys.give em a ring cos they come back very quickly with burial details.

I take my hat off to them cos they are BRILL

Thanks Shirley

I must admit with my dealings of them they were great and gave me lots of info regarding the plot, who owned it and who else was buried in there. We are hoping on our next visit not only to visit this grave, but hopefully find a few more Burnetts, Elys and Berrys buried there also as this is where the majority of my ancestors lived. And Woolwich also, but not till later.

Just got to wait for my hubby to get another day off, so that we can visit again soon!!

The Cemeteries team at Greenwich Council are great - 020 8856 2232. They'll look up the burial and give you a ref i.e. B251 or P895.

Be warned the cemetery is huge and on a hill so you'll need to look at the various maps dotted around to ensure you're in the correct section. Sometimes the site manager is there – he’s based in the gate house and is also very helpful in helping to locate graves.

All the graves are marked usually down near ground level with the section and the plot number so you can work out the location.

The Cemetery is on Wickham Lane where the road changes name to Upper Wickham Lane - the road is called Cemetery Road - it’s only a very small road. Once up the hill there’s a great view across London towards Canary Wharf and the City.

Thanks
Rachel

Thanks Racheal for all the info, I know this might sound weird but it sounds like a nice place.

Can they look on their system for anybody, say for instance if I asked them to look for any other people with surname of Burnett buried in there would they be able to tell me without first name or date of death?, as you say it is a large cemetary and I only normally have a couple of hours that I can spend in plumstead as I live in suffolk and have to get back for the children from school.

It's a very peaceful place with a beautiful aspect - yes a nice place for a cemetery.

Give them a call and see what they say. I do know that they’re not fully computerized so it may take them a week or so to get back to you.

You can make an appointment to search the registers - it think from memory only on a Thursday.

To give you a comparison - I phoned another London Borough on the Essex boarders today - very abrupt, £45 for a search, 15 working days (with all the details could be longer if with limited details), needed full name, date of death, address at time of death and no guarantee of finding anything. Fortunately, I have the details but still £45 is a bit steep to find out if someone’s buried or cremated and location of plot.

Yet another neighbouring LB on the Essex boarders - no charge, wanted as much info as I could give via an email and got back to me within a week, unfortunately it came back a ‘no’ and it was suggested I contact the £45 LB.

Gold star service from Greenwich.

Thanks
Rachel
