Some search records show the maiden name of the mother but how do i go about finding out a maiden name if the records dont state the it?

if you know the grooms name and where and when (roughly) they were married you could search the birth marriage and death index.

This is certainly far from full proof, however if the grooms name is unusual you can be fairly certain.

Failing this you could send off for a birth cert of a son or daugher as would contain the maiden name.

Who are you looking for?

Assume this is FreeBMD?

You could try finding the marriage - depends on name you are searching for. If it's a fairly uncommon name and you have a rough idea of date of marriage then it's possible. You can then find wife in previous census by maiden name to check if age and place of birth matches to her details.

If you type in groom's surname in a marriage FreeBMD search and the wife's first name it comes up with all options - doesn't match them up for you but it saves you checking each one individually.

It's a bit slow but it can help.
