Hello, I have just received the birth certificate of my great grandfather Granville. The family history is that he was born as Granville Marriott (in which name he was registered with) but changed his name to his father's when his mum left - this was Walvin. He got married under this name and his father is down on the certificate (Harold Walvin). When I received the birth cert I was surprised to see just the mother's name Eleanor Marriott nee Taylor. So I tracked down the marriage in 1906 of Eleanor Taylor and Thomas Marriott. Granville was born in 1911. So I have a theory - Eleanor was widowed and had four children with Harold - but they never married so the children were put under her name (although I found out Granville's middle name was Walvin as was two of his siblings it would seem). The story goes on that Eleanor left Harold and he later married another woman - I have found nothing of this or even if Thomas Marriott ever did die. So where do I go from here to first track down what happened to Harold and Eleanor once they went their separate ways?

Karen , Just a thought and it might be useless but depending on when Eleanor left him and Harolds age, he may have fought in WW1 . You could try searching Army Pension records , if you find him it may give you his address and next of kin. I know it,s a long shot .... Good luck Kim
