Von, I think I do need to look at the workhouse records and see what I can gleen from those. There was also an Edith Hickman in the workhouse, she may have been another daughter so I think a trip to Birmingham is in order.
Thanks

It did cross my mind that Sarah Hickman formally Bateman was actually a Bateman by a previous marriage. It getting far to confusing!

Thank you all for your help, I shall continue looking at various records x

Hi Tracie,

Did Sarah perhaps get married twice and that isn't her real maiden name just the name from previous marriage .

Sometimes they put down both maiden and previous married name and some times they don't.

Just a thought

Im not convinced the girl is related to Rebecca, going right back to 1841 with her, there is no sign of anyone, other than a daughter Rebecca( born 1839 ish) and husband John that could connect them.

its getting a bit of a convuluted theory but...maybe Rebecca jnr had an Illig daughter, so born a Hickman, Rebecca then marries a Bateman.

History then repeats

I too would have thought she would have put him down on the birth cert as deceased. So, Charlotte could have made up a father for her marriage certificate to look more respectable...that would explain why I cant find him. However on her birth cert her mother is listed as a Hickman, formally Bateman.......?
I think this may be one of those mysteries that never gets solved!!

He may never have existed as such, maybe a name and occ for the purpose of her marriage cert ( and of course, conveniently dead)

have you the eveidence that Sarah, her mother actually married him? ( Bateman > Hickman?)

I would have thought that if a man died while his wife was carrying his child, she'd reg the birth with his name, but noted as dec'd

Ive just looked through the census's re Rebecca, but no sign of a son called John, just her husband, which is a rather loose link!

I guess... thats the right Charlotte.
Why can I not find Johns death or marriage though? With the info from either of those certificates I could be a bit more definate.

It might be worth checking to see if there area workhouse records.
I have seen some which state reasons for being there, entry and leaving dates and nearest relative.

Hi
Thats what I thought, but I cant find his death around the time she was born. Also, she was born in a road just behind the workhouse, so I guess her mother lived there still but maybe couldnt afford to keep her...?

This is driving me mad, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Im looking for the ancestors of Charlotte Elizabeth Hickman b. 2/6/1887 Birmingham. Her mother was Sarah Elizabeth Hickman, formally Bateman. No father on certificate. Im struggling to find any further details.
On Charlottes marriage certificate it has her father as John Hickman (deceased) a rope and ?twine maker.
As her father is not on her birth cert does that mean that there was a good chance he was dead? (She was bought up in the Birmingham workhouses)
Where do I go from here?
Thanks
