Hi, Wonder if anyone can give any help or advice. I have traced my grt grt Grandad,William Henry Martin ,born 1848, back to 1871,when he is living with his married sister Maria E Welford & her husband.I have his M/C dated 28/11/1875,married in the parish of Shoreditch to Sarah Starr. He is aged 27 & living in 4 New St.His trade is 'packer'. Witnesses are William Cleland & Ann Everett. His father is recorded as Edward Martin,Hawker.I have been unable to trace him in either the 1861 census or the 1851 census.I have ordered every B/C for a William Martin, living anywhere in London, born in 1847-1848 (and there are a lot!),but none of them match up. I thought i had found his sister's,(Maria c1841), B/C so I could at least find out mother's name but that also proved to be an incorrect cert. In all census I can find him his birthplace is recorded as Bethnal Green. |

There is an Edward and Elizabeth Martin on the 1851 census born bethnal green living St Luke Old Street Middlesex. Edward is described as a commercial traveller. Could this be wiilliams father? |

I thought about that Edward too, Loz. But I would have expected Maria & William with them as they were born in 1841 & 1848. |

Hi, Thanks for your help everyone. Ozibird - no that's the one I thought was my Maria & i ordered the B/C hoping I could find mothers maiden name but it was another Maria - no connection. Loz I did check that but cannot be sure as no Maria or William there. I did look at an Edw & Elizh Martin in 1841 census because they have a Maria of abt the right age but I dismissed this because there is also a William born abt 1836 & my William was not born until 1848 (unless no.1 William died?).Edw is recorded as a 'Lighterman'. I found them again in 1851 but no William so don't think it's my Martin's. It's so frustrating when you hit a brickwall like this but will keep plugging away & hopefully something will turn up. |
