Anyone have any other suggestions re. tracing Navy record for a Michael Hayes (born Passage West, Co. Cork 1879). Received info. taken from commonwealth war graves site - Service No. 290877 - but NOT correct person. Details I have are that he was a Stoker in 1911 and Stoker Petty Officer on HMS Nymph in 1914. Deceased by 1927. Widow's name would be Jane. Assuming possibly died during war.

on the war graves commission web site there is a michael hayes 2nd stoker died in 1915

There are WW1 naval records on the documentsonline site. They are downloadable, but there are several men with the same name, born in Cork, although not the place you mention.

Sorry, Margaret but why is he not the person we found for you the other day? Are you suggesting a sailor would never transfer to another ship? My father served on 3 ships during WW2.

Could you just tell us what we got wrong please?

It is true that sailors did move between ships, especially in wartime. I recommend you invest £3.50 in getting his record from National Archives which will tell you which ships he served on and when.

For what it is worth HMS Nymphe (sic) was a 740 ton destroyer, built 1911 and sold 1921 so it was not sunk. The chances however of a man serving on only one ship from 1914 to 1918 are slim.

After losing his first wife he would have had his records amended to show his mother Ellen as next of kin. If his records were not subsequently updated Ellen would have remained on his record as next of kin and somebody just assumed it was his wife. They also seem to have put her address as his place of birth. But errors like this are typical when researching families. For £3.50 you could answer this immediately if you were to acquire his record.

That's what she's saying Joan, but if Margaret will forgive me, I think she's been hasty in dismissing it! ( I think we should disregard all connections to HMS Psyche though!)

Can somebody access the Irish census to find Ellen Hayes, of Couscroneen, Union Hall, Leap, Co. Cork around the time of WW1? That would establish if she was his mother born c1859
