Well since I can't find him on the BMD (or can't find a match that seems close) I thought he may have died out of the country in the war.

If he was in the Boer War, why would his wife describe herself as a widow?

True enough Reg but I am confident that Herbert is Sarah's father.
How would I find out if her went to fight in the Boer War? I have tried several sites with soldiers' names but he was not listed.

Names of fathers on marriage certs don't prove anything, unfortunately.

He was named on Sarah's marriage certificate. I think the birth was registered late.

I would work on the assumption that the birth was registered late ... unless of course they had been living apart for some time and she had another man. Otherwise it would be a bit sudden wouldn't it? Be interesting to see if father's name appears on birth cert though.

Births have to be registered within 6 weeks now,but not so in the early 1900's. My mother was born Dec 1907 but not registered until March 1908.

Hrllo
I am almost positive on the birth of Sarah and as far as Thomas goes I am thinking he is a nephew of Herbert. Herbert had 2 brothers Arthur and Sidney who may have passed away and left Thomas with Grandma. He is still with her on the 1901.

Thanks Rose & Sylvia
My Great grandfather was Herbert Haigh b 1862 (in Tickhill/ East Retford I believe) married to Fanny Holland in 1887. My grandmother was Sarah b. 1902.

Gail,

Could be interesting!!

The 1901 Census was taken on the night of 31 March 1901.

You say your grandmother's birth was registered June quarter 1902 (ie, in April, May or June)

I believe births have to be registered within 6 weeks, so that means she was born somewhere between March to end June 1902. The earliest would have been mid-February, with registration at the beginning of April (if my maths is correct!).

That's about a year after your ggm says she was widowed!

I would buy the birth cert. Could be the father was killed in the Boer War.

Can you list the details?

Hello
I am stumped. My Great grandmother is listed as a widow on the 1901 census and my Grandmother's birth was registered the next year- June quarter 1902. I haven't purchased her birth record yet and cannot find her father's death anywhere. I assume my GGM was pregnant at the time of the census or/and the birth may have been registered late. What should I do to be certain/
