Does anyone know if these records are available? I have a gt gt grandfather who had a leg amputated in York(Chelsea) Hospital in Sept/Oct 1807. He was discharged on to an outpatient pension. in November 1807, (from the 23rd Regt of Foot.)

you might be lucky and find his Army records on the National Archives site. i got my Grtx4 grandfathers records from there he was in the Army from 1825 -1849 and came out as a pensioner

Pension Records
Three of the main record types available at the Public Record Office which contain pension information are the Chelsea Regimental Registers (War Office file 120), the records of Soldiers Discharged Through Chelsea Hospital (W.O. 97), and the Applications for Pensions for Widows and Children [of officers], 1755-1908 (W.O. 42).
Like many of the other records concerning British Army personnel in the early part of the nineteenth century, the pension records discussed in this article are organized along regimental lines. So, to use them efficiently, you must know which regiment your ancestor served in before you can begin.

You should be able to find him as the records for WO97 are online for soldiers discharged up to 1854.

Thank you for your input on the Chelsea Hospital records, I will follow them up.
Joan - my gt gt grandfathers name was William Hobbs, he was born in Alderton,Wilts in 1784 and died there in April 1837, just too early for a death certificate He married in Chelsea in November 1807 and they returned to Alderton to live.. They had 10 children.

Hi Kath,

Have you tried contacting the Chelsea Pension society directly? I think this is the email address I used a couple of years ago [email protected] I simply emailed them and asked where I would find the information about my great grandfather. I had a lovely reply (the next day) stating that they had checked the records and that my relative was an outpatient so there were no specific records for him. It might be worth a shot!
