Could some one let me know, When a £27 search is done for a grave,what information does it give you?? many thanks Helenx

Who is going to charge £27?

I know that my local council have recently started charging for finding a grave (about £20 I think) but they will only tell you where it is and who is in it.

They won't photograph it or send a transcription of the wording on it.

£20 is cheap compared to what we have to pay in Leeds for a search of the books for graves ie plot number and where situated in graveyard/cemetery.

Leeds charge £40 just for a search if you have the month/year/name.

i have emailed the cemetery dept for leigh and wigan and given them the names and date of death and they have found me the grave told me who else is in there and who owned the grave. they gave me the grave plot and number and all this for the princley sum of £0 yes i said nothing now how is that for good service.

I had to ringThe main Cemetery in leeds a couple of years ago and was told £40 is the search fee,Told them the graveyard in Leeds and luckily the graveyard didn't belong to Leeds City council anymore as it had been built on back in the late50's.

LCC emailed me and told me the Graveyard info belonged to Leeds Uni,in the Special Collections and I rung Leeds Uni and they made an appointment for me to go look through the books/tomes.

Found the info I wanted and it didn't cost me a penny.

That is good cor I just wish Leeds would not charge so much.

I bought the NBI for £37 and thats for all the country.

its not fair how one council charges a lot more than others. i know i have been lucky but i really had expected to pay something if there was a one payment accross the country then i am sure people would make use of it and then councils would make some money

Our cemetery office have been making rumblings for over a year about bringing in a charge. It's even listed on the leaflet of charges, but they don't have to enforce it and the lovely people who work there enjoy doing the look ups, they find it just as fascinating helping other people find their answers.

It contains burials amongst other info..you can do a search and then if you find a possible burial you can buy credits. A £5 credit goes a long way.

I found a grave for my husbands 3x gt grandfather on the website. I had another possible son and family on the census but was unable to make the connection until I found this entry and they were all buried together....that was worth £5 alone to me : )))

Wakefield Council let you search on the site for free. You can search the registers and crem records. If you find a grave they will meet you to show you the plot. All for free!!
