You must be able to add people together on your tree who are already there...does that make sense?

Dont ask me how but i was adding a partner to one of the names in my tree, pressed a button or two on my keyboard (by accident) and ended up with the original now "married" to his brother...

eg Walter Wright was "married" to his brother Thomas Wright, who was already on my tree.

You could click on each and they would be shown as "married" though only one would show the parents, then you'd click on the other then they'd have the parents...i really have no idea how i did it.

Maybe GR just dont want to tell us how to do it...or maybe they dont know...

Hm been there done all that lot for the last 30+years and moved beyond Genes to connections all over the world, through other online methods as well as Societies . No, and time is not on my side any longer.

I am not very impressed with Genes match for my Joe Bloggs bap Without End Northants matching with Joe Bloggs bap somewhere in Australia same year. Wow!

But each to their own. As Robert says a good package of your own is worth its weight in gold, and you can still stay on Genes if you want, though I hope you realise that any genealogist worth their salt can read your tree without ever asking you for it. That is how I know that only one person on here is researching my tree and another who has all my info.

Hi Robert and Janet,

Like I said, I'm more concerned with the making of online contacts than what the tree looks like or how neat or stylish the printouts are. I can sort all that out in the years to come.

However, time is pressing for everyone else; people are getting old; need to make the most of GR whilst we still can. Fuzzy memories can be re-sharpened by a good old chin-wag.

It's only recently hit me that, since the last of my grand-parents passed on a few years ago, we've lost a whole 20-odd years off the collective family memory.

I don't mind people knocking GR as a tree-tool and I'm not here to defend it or anything, but just remember what it's actually meant to be used for.

I have 3 siblings from one family marrying 3 siblings in another family and I have no trouble with my Family History Programme on my computer in sorting them. Have you got another package besides Genes R? I must admit I prefer to keep my main tree on my computer and not on Genes.

I have this in my tree now, as well.

Seeing as how the principal selling point of the GR tree is to get hotmatches and make contact with people, I think you could get away with entering them only once.

The duplicate box should be deliberately left as (Father) or (Mother) so as not to trigger double-hotmatches. In the notes (which viewers are able to read) say how to navigate via the spouse's brother/sister to get to the entry with their names, dates and other details, which can be copied.

Your contact then does the reverse, pasting the names and dates into the box for their direct ancestor and leaving the sibling box as (Sister) or (Brother), with navigation notes pointing the other way.

As they continue adding the ancestors of this person, you each should now only be getting only one hotmatch per individual. Unless, of course I have misunderstood the nature of the match criteria and it is not simply names alone but (name+relationship linkage).

This has happened twice in my tree. You just have to keep an eye on their birth dates so as not to mix them up.

You cannot do it on the genes tree build facility.
You can however do this on a family tree program on your home computer.
You can export your gedcom from genes and import in to the program make the changes then export the new gedcom back to genes

There are quite a few free programs you can download to do this.

Legacy is a good free one.

I have had similar problems with adding family marriages to my tree over the years

I have ancestors where two brothers from one family married two sisters from another. How do I link these together ... it is just giving me duplicate names on my tree ... help please !!
