This is probably a very long shot, but here goes.... I've recently been going through the record for Selby Blue Coat School. Early records - 1850 -60s show the number of applicants and names of families. the majority of families were not successful in gaining a place in the Blue Coat School for their boys, but were shown to be given 'Brown Coat' status. Has anyone got any info on the Selby Blue Coat Trust, what the criteria was for 'electing' boys into the school, and what the Brown Coat status was? |

Where did you get the records from that you have recently been going through? can that source not help you? |

I got the info from the archives at the Borthwick Institute at York Uni. I had two people there looking for any mention of Brown Coats, but they didn't come up with anything. They were hoping that I would be able to find some reference on some web searches. I will try the national archives. Thanks for that suggestion. |
