Can any one kindly tell me if the whole area of Byker in Newcastle was completely redeveloped or if any of the old roads or streets remain. My great grandfather Robert Stephenson lived there in the 1880s as did his brother John Joseph Stephenson.I hope to travel north from Bristol sometime to have a look for myself but it will not be for a while! Thanks Mike |

Which ones in particular are you looking for Mike ? I live on the boundaries Walker/Byker, a lot of the old streets are pretty much the same. Marie |

Hi Mags I have a John Joseph Stephenson at Byker Street in the 1881 census. He is an engine fitter with a big family(but no wife)and a 'servant' lady! I wondered how big the houses were! Mike |

Byker Street is still there, as a matter of fact a large branch of my family have lived there for years ! The houses on one side are very old fashioned houses with large rooms and high ceilings but on the other side they are more modern. If you have a door number I can check to see if your house is still there ? Marie |

Mike... I was born in Byker (32 Morton Street) 1930 and you prompted me to look at it via Google Earth.. Wow! I can recognise parts of it but it really has been shovelled up a bit. The Byker wall is clear to see and allows me to relate the position of quite a few of the streets and roads I knew so well... Shields Road for instance, Bothal Street and Welbeck Road. Incidently Byker Street is or was in Walker where I also lived until 1951. Contact me direct if you want more information. K |
