I HAVE AN ANCESTOR IN THE 54TH REGIMENT OF FOOT. IN THE 1891 SCOTTISH CENSUS IT STATES HIS CHILDREN WERE BORN 1866-USA, 1868-WEST INDIES, 1873&1875-EAST INDIES. I ALSO HAVE A LIST OF MILITARY BIRTHS FOR MY SURNAME AND HAVE FOUND OTHER OLDER CHILDREN BORN TO A MAN OF THE SAME SURNAME IN THE 54TH FOOT REGIMENT. I.E.1860-CORK, 1861-SPIKE ISLAND, AND 1866-ST JOHNS? IS THERE ANYONE WHO COULD CONFIRM THAT THE 54TH REGIMENT OF FOOT WERE IN THESE PLACES IN THESE YEARS? THE LIST OF MILITARY BIRTHS I HAVE ALSO SHOWS THE 1866 USA BIRTH AS FREDERICTOWN? 1868 WEST INDIES BIRTH AS PAYNTERS VALE? DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHERE THESE PLACES ARE? THANKS IN ADVANCE! I DON'T KNOW WHO ELSE TO ASK! EVELYN MOLONEY |

The 54th Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment. Originally formed in 1755 as the 56th Regiment of Foot it was renumbered as the 54th when the 50th Regiment and 51st Regiment were disbanded. It was renamed as 54th (the West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot on 31 August 1782. As part of the Childers Reforms it was united with the 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot, to form The Dorsetshire Regiment in 1881. It is now part of the regiment known as the Rifles. The official websites are pretty useless for the period you're looking for as they weren't engaged in any 'glorious' battles. However I found websites of men serving in the regiment & know it was in Bermuda at least 1868-1870, & India 1871 -1877. Spike Island, County Cork, Ireland, is a small island in the approaches to Cork. St John's is in Newfoundland. Paynter's Vale is in Bermuda. Update: Just found this - Until 1868, British Army units stationed in Bermuda were part of the Nova Scotia Command. A bit more - 54th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot 1765 - 1800, 1804 - 1851, 1858 The regiment was actively employed in America at New York, Charlestown, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and elsewhere during the War of Independence (1766). After the peace it was a good many years in New Brunswick, at which time the well-known William Cobbett, M.P., was regimental sergeant-major. From 1845 to 1854 the 54th was stationed at Gibraltar, in the West Indies, and Canada. Canada Fredericton is the capital of New Brunswick, Canada. Regiments and Units Serving in Canada 1755-1871 BRITISH ARMED FORCES Army Troops Infantry 54th Regiment, 1783-91: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick; 1851-54: Quebec, Ontario. |
