hi i have afamily who on the 1861 census were aboard a vessel 'david' the vessel was registered in holyhead anglesey but the census result was on the 1861 ENGLAND census. the family came from wigan and leigh lancashire. My question is how can i find out where this boat was docked ? it doesnt give an area or anything ? any ideas. see below in a mo thanks linda |

This is one of the errors on the Ancestry index. Anyone on a vessel in a home port in Britain is given the registration district Anglesey, sub-registration district Holyhead. You have to go on Civil Parish 'Vessels', Town 'Dock', County Lancashire - which is not a great deal better. At least you know they were somewhere in Lancashire and it's much better than the many boatman who get missed off the census altogether. |

I've looked at the adjoining 'piece' (4506), which lists the vessels as being in Queen Dock, Liverpool. The reg'n district is recorded as Anglesey, as per 4507........ However, when checking 4508, the vessels are in Barrow Harbour. So, not conclusive, I'm afraid...........although I would say they were definitely in Lancashire Reg |

thanks andrea and reggie. so it looks like they are in lancashire. could anyone tell me if there is any type of register for boats.?why is the boat registered in holyhead anglesey ? i would love to find out about then i cant find them anywhere on th 1871 census but on the 1881 they are living in leigh but james occupation is boatman and i have them on the 1901 but not 1891. any help on any of this would be great thanks linda |
