Hello again The last question to Deb still stands, but his last child was born in 1893, a minor detail which I didn't add!! So his death must have been after then. Sorry Alice |

Thank you Clive and Deb. One question to Deb, how do I access the Deaths at Sea? Sorry to sound thick. Alice |

Hi Alice, I may have found him on Deaths at Sea listings. There is a John Jones died 27/1/1883 aged 38 years. He drowned along with another fellow called Phillip Beynon. The vessel was called the Agnes Jack followed by the numbers 29983. Deb:) |

You might start your search here - Merchant Navy records are rather fragmented: http://www.nationalarchives(.)gov(.)uk/militaryhistory/merchant/step5.htm (remove) Also, if you enter 'merchant navy' in the text search box at the top of this board you fill find many threads on this topic. There was a poster doing crew look-ups at one time; I think it may have been on the 'records office' board. |

At long last, I have traced John Benjamin Jones (b1845 Middlesex) who was a mariner in the Merchant Navy. Is there any way I can trace the vessel he served on and whether he died at sea? The last record I have is the 1881 Census which lists him as a mariner and his last address on shore was 12 York Terrace, Liverpool. Any help would be appreciated, although I suspect it's going to be a very difficult journey! Alice |
