My great-grandfather ---- William Cogdon ---- was born in 1882 in Sunderland. As far as I can see, there are no other William Cogdons born around this time (within a couple of years). So this should be him. However, the only death index I can find is for dec 1911, William Cogdon, aged 29, Newcastle on Tyne, so this William would have been born in 1882 also...when I am POSITIVE he didn't die then because he got married for a second time in 1913/4 and had his last child in 1937 (his second wife was at least 10 years his junior). According to my Nan (his daughter born 1918) he died in the fifties. Why is there another William's death registered? I understand that william is a common name...not only in general but in the Cogdon family, but I can't understand why only one birth is registered, but there are definately 2 deaths. Any ideas? I was thinking that the one who died in 1911 was born under another name and took the name Cogdon when his mother married. However, I don't see 2 William Cogdon's in 1891 or 1901. Rose |

Have you got a marriage certificate for your great grandfather...hopefully showing his father? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1879 Cogdon William James Sunderland 10a 604 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Sep 1882 Cogdon William Sunderland 10a 641 These 2 registrations are only a few years apart and marriage age and age at death could possibly be wrong. Have you followed these 2 people to determine which is your man? Gwyn |

I may have to get the certificate to clear this up. He married Mary Ann Heads in 1914 after his first wife's death in 1913 (but I'm not sure what her name was), as far I know he only married twice because Mary Ann Heads is definately my Nan's mother who was born in July 1918 (my uncle found one of her certificates that told me this). The only William Cogdon on the 1891 census was born in 1882. However there is one thing I don't understand on the 1901 census which says he is living with Clara, Margt, Backy J and Barker L Cogdon. But none of these are shown on the others. Thats mainly why I thought there must be more that one. The 1901 William was 18 then, so he would have been born in about 1883. Clare PS Just checked, my nan definately didn't have a step-mother. |

Thanks Beryl, but the William who died in 1911 was 29, and both were born in 1882/3. The other william was in his thirties I think when he had my nan in 1918. I don't think they were related...at least not as closely as this. Although William did have 2 brothers with the same name, so I wouldn't have been surprised if i didn't know the above. Thanks anyway, Clare. |

The family are living with the Fowlers in 1891. The Fowlers are Barker Ramsey Cogdon's wife's family. Clara is with Barker's brother. Rose |
