FRENCH birth certificates...Where to find them.

Do the French have a searceable birth registration index?.... Correct date of birth is unknown....early 1900s to about 1912 possibly, as age at death and marriage don't match.. ....Full name of female child known and a possible area. |

Thank you for the links. Am I reading that right.... Someone is offering...for a fee... to tell people which address to write to? Is there not a list of administrative areas and addresses available somewhere without having to go through a 'middle man'? Gwyn |

Hello, In order to apply for french 'acte de naissance' etc you need to know where the event took place as all BMD are archived locally & not centrally. If you know where the event took place you then need to contact the local Mairie (Town Hall). Gillian |

Another thing. The french are very strict about the 100 year rule so you will not be able to obtain actes de naissance etc after 1907. G |

Thank you.... This is all useful information and will be most helpful. This lady was said to be 50, when she died in 1961, however when she married in 1940, she was supposedly 35...... so we will have to wait and see whether her birth comes under the 100 years closure or not. Gwyn |

Gillian is correct about the 100 year rule unless you are a close relative but even if you are a close relative and can prove it, you will need to know the place of birth. You say that you possibly have the area of birth - that may help depending on the name; if it is of the 'Smith' variety then doubt you will have any luck but a rarer name may bring you some reward. Care to give the name, date and area ?? As for Kaz if you go to Findmypast there is a section dealing with Overseas British births from 1761 - if you are a member click on 'Births'. |
