I'll just add that I, too, have an Ellen who is listed in some Census as Nellie.

My mother was known to her family as Nellie.........her given name was Ellen. Reg

Nellie/Ellen works for me, looking down the names again. Of the 6 daughters, one is Julia the other Julia Ellen and following the order they are listed on the records, Julia Ellen could be Nellie. Thanks everyone

I've just come back from the Records Office, and the Nellie in my tree was christened Ellen.

Thanks so far, have found the whole family on a military list ie next of kin list and hardly any of them use their first names let alone decide which one is Nellie! Elaine

It can be a name in its own right - hence my great-aunt Nellie. Or it may be short for Eleanor. I've even come across an Amelia who became a Nellie.

Hi, Up here in scotland, Nellie is often used instead of Helen, but have found English rellies use Nellie as a name. Phyllis
