How can a child be born to a man who has been dead for 9 years? See below:-

My 2xgreat grandfather was William Egerton born 1850 in Ancoats, Manchester. He was a cotton dyer and son of John Egerton and Susannah (nee Hodges). He married Sarah Wallace in 1870, had a daughter, Elizabeth Ann and died in 1871. Sarah is on the 1881 census with Elizabeth and a son, John J, aged 9 months. I have a death certificate for John, which states he was the son of William Egerton, a dyer, late of Manchester. How is that possible? I purchased a birth certificate for a John Egerton born 1880 but this turned out to be the wrong one. His parents are Thomas and Mary Ann. The only other possible John is the son of William’s brother, Benjamin. Is it possible that the birth was never registered? Thanks in advance. Lynne

have you loked at the actual image- could johnJ be 9 years - hence mother was expecting when pa died?

If the mother was asked by the registrar what her husband's name was and she 'forgot' to mention that he was deceased, then his name would automatically put on the birth certificate as the father, as a married woman's husband is always assumed to be the father of her children - even when his isn't!!
