Hi Sue I have been to LMA countless times and I only found out this beer house thing last time I visited which was in June, so will need to look up victuallers records and rate books to see if they appear on there next time I go. It would make sense if they ran a coffee shop then later on to run a beer house, its just they then fell on hard times I think. Ben |

The LMA holds Licensed Victuallers Records for that period which might give you a bit more info. Unfortunately these records are not available online but you can find out from their catalogue if they hold what you need and then possibly appeal for a look up on here if you can't get there yourself. I found a record there that licensed my 2x gt grandfather to have a billiard table in his pub! Sue |

Hi there Well their poor relief examination says their reason for application for relief was 'Destitute'. I would have thought that they might have run Gloucester Arms although the poor relief examination doesnt say if they ran it or were just lodgers there. I shall consider the fact that it closed down as in early 1877 they managed a coffe house in Lambeth. If it had been just a beer house then it might not have appeared in any London Pub lists then? Thanks about the Alvey Street. I really need an 1877 or 1878 London PO Directory to find out more. Ben |

There is an Alvey street in Walworth. Beer house would also include small home brewers and off - licences. There is a pub called the Surrey Hen & Chickens, 52 Alvey Street, Walworth. Hope this helps |

If your ancestor fell on hard times in 1878 and ended up in the poorhouse, surely, if he was running a beer house (rather than a public house) it would have closed down, and therefore not be on the 1881 census. maggie |

Hi My ancestors fell upon hard times in November 1878 and the sick relief examination for Holborn gave their last address as 'Gloucester Arms, Elvey or Alvey Street, Walworth' in South London. I would imagine that was some sort of beer house or pub yet I cannot find it listed on the London Public House website or anywhere else. There was a Gloucester Arms in Mason Street, Walworth in 1881 but the street address on the examination for my Roberts family says Elvey or Alvey Street. Is it more likely to have been a beer house rather than a pub at all? Thanks Ben |
