It looks as though records up to 1972 are at National Archives - not online though, you'd need to visit. But apparently a lot were destroyed. After 1972, sorry, but I don't know where they'd be! |

Nicola Try your library to see if they can obtain, for you to borrow, a copy of ..... Records of Merchant Shipping and Seaman (PRO Publications 1998) by K.Smith, C.Watts and M.Watts. A 'best guide' to Merchant Navy records. Chris |

The National Archives site has some Merchant Navy records which you can order by digital express or by post. I think it was £8.50 but can't remember off hand. If you search the catalogue under BT 372 and put in your ancestors name ~ surname the inital , the date shown is their birthdate. Teresa |

I want to research into my grandfathers history at sea- has anyone done this and do you have any advice? I know he was a Steward merchantile marine in 1952 when my father was born- and registered and a Cheif stoker on my dads marriage certificate in 1977 . Not sure where to start with this- and im also wondering what sort of costs this incurs?? Thanks all, nic x |
