It took me ages to find out what Taggy was short for as there is one on both sides of my Tree......turns out to be Agnes.
I have a Sandy...i thought he was called this as his mothers maiden name was sandford, but no it's short for Alexander!
Belle - she was called Isabella
Betsy - she was Elizabeth

almost forgot
Cicily..... Cissie

Nancy....Nanny

Margaret...... Maggie

but i do have 2 Maggies that were actually called maggie, a pain with the first one i found i was looking for a margaret didnt help with the surname smith!

To Margaret from Sussex Toby is an abreviation of Thobias (think that is how it is spelt) Thanks to Margaret Atkinson and Di from Sydney I have spen the past 2 years looking for a Fanny Bird....haven't tried Florence, Francis or Fran! My grandfather has the middle names 'Samuel French'. My mother has traced three tree back a long way and the name 'French' never comes up. Mum asked him in conversation one day ( he is still alive and a young 94!!!) how the name came about, he said a brother just named him...We worked out that he was conceived on Bastille Day !!!! My two grandmothers were Eleanor and Margaret Ellen. Both were called Nell for all of their lives. But it is a pet-name, their proper names were used on all official stuff. Amelia => Millicent (and vice-versa) This alternative name baffled me for quite a long time. She was registered and christened Amelia, appeared in the census and married as Millicent, then died as Amelia. Certificates have been checked. It is not the only example of this alternative name. -- Dave.

Our Nellie's were registered as Helen, Eleanora and Nellie. Bob was Cecil Alfred Herbert Tom was Arthur Edmond Richard Dick was Edith Isobel Laura Kit was Laura Alice Marjorie Cissy was Rebecca Fanny Eliza was sometimes Fanny, or sometimes Eliza or even Frances Elizabeth on the odd occasion. Dorrie, both Dorothy and Dorcas Etty or Hetty - Hester, Esther or Ethel and a couple of blokes baptised ROYAL, but don't know what they were called every day !! Di
