Ancestor in Wakefield jail in 1851 - I like to kno

An ancestor of mine was in Wakefield jail at the time of the 1851 census. John Robinson, born in Stockton on Tees c1831, census ref. HO/107 - 2327 - 527 - 12. can anybody suggest how I could find out why he was there, I would love to find out. It looks as though he was a labourer at the time, however later in life he became a chartered accountant!

Hi Stu Have you tried Wkefield Archives/ West Yorkshire Archives Service - google for address and contact details. They are VERY helpful, they found and sent records of my Great Gran when she was in an industrial home after being in prison in 1800. I understand the police also keep some records but don't know how you would get them. Best wishes Jo

also try a2a (Access to Archives) ....... I've had some success on there www*a2a*org*uk replace * with . as usual

Hi Stu Wakefield prison was obviously a popular place. My great grandfather George Lenanton was there in 1881. Still dont know why yet. Best of luck in your search Chezza
