Is it coincidence or is there are reason why I cant find some of my ancestors on the 1871 census. I must have had maybe or 5 or so rellies that appear on 1861 and then again on 1881. Have I just been unlucky...? |

Perhaps they've been mis transcribed with weird and wonderful names. Have you tried searching on just a first name, year of birth plus or minus a year or two... and birthplace? Sometimes this will bring up a name that looks the right shape but maybe has some wrong letters, so doesn't get picked up in a Soundex search. Gwyn |

Oh gosh, havent got my notes with me. 2 people I know are missing. Charles Livings b1840 Long Ashton Somerset - (as you mentioned he was transcribed as Charles Ewings on 1841 census) - The other was Susan York b1841Chew Magna. Susan had a child (whilst unmarried) in Aug 1871 which probably accounts for her missing. Perhaps she was kept out view?? I also have John Seal born in New Brotton Yorks in 1866. Child of Thomas & Minerva I think (he went on to marry Ann but I think this was later) |

Alison, don't add the letter 'e' on the end of Seal ............. or 's' or any other possible endings. Just use *, the wild card symbol!! It will bring up Seal, Seals, Seall, Seale, etc etc etc. That's what I almost always do ............. in fact, more and more often I do not entering the full name, I use only part of it and follow with the *, eg Schof* or Schofi* for Schofield. Amazing what turns up!! It also works with Christian names, eg, Lou* will bring up Louisa but also Lousia which is a very common mis-spelling! Sylvia |
