Liz From 1792 all foreigners arriving in England were required to register under the Aliens Act 1792 with a Justice of the Peace. Any surviving records would be with the local record office. From 1836 the Aliens Act of 1836 required aliens to sign and file certificates of arrival. These records are at Kew. I believe the 1836 Act stood until 1905 when the first modern Immigration Act was introduced. Chris |

Chris is right except that I think it finished much earlier than 1905. Unfortunately the boxes containing the records each contain about 1,000 A4-type sheets and cover a three-month period. Each sheet refers to the arrival of one ship and lists all aliens on board, Some of them are illegible. It's a mammoth task to go through them - I fell asleep in the reading room and snored as I searched for my G-g-g-grandfather's arrival in 1857 (acutely embarrasing) - so unless you know the year of arrival it's going to be almost impossible. By the way - I found several German musicians as I searched. What was the surname? |
