There are too many William Cogdons too work out which one is my nan's father! What do I do? Oh yeah...any ideas on how to narrow down the search for the surname Evans? LOADS of Evanses in Llanelli!! Thanks :D

Well, you need to work backwards from what you have as solid facts. What years are we talking about. Do you have the marriage cert for your nan? That would show her fathers name and occupation. If you have the birth cert for her it would show where she was born, mums maiden name and dads name and occupation - all these details can narrow down the options. So - marriage cert or birth cert - £7 from GRO online if you have the GRO ref.

Nan was born in 1918. I know her mother's name but William had been married before has confused me, especially as both William and Mary (nans mum) had a child each before they got married. I just don't know which William he is on the census.

Hi Clare You need to get hold of William and Mary's marriage cert - that should give you their ages plus fathers' names and occupations - which will help you work out which one is the correct one in the census. Jill
