Can't find John's birth or George and Mary's marriage in NSW, Queensland or Victoria, and the Western Australia BMD site's not working at the moment. The other Australian States don't have BMDs online.

It might be useful to get Lavinia jr's birth certificate. Australian certs have a lot more information than ours - it should contain the place and date of the parents' marriage, the parents' dates and places of birth, and details of all prior issue of the marriage. You can order it from the NSW BMD index site I linked to above, but it's cheaper to get a transcription from an authorised agent: http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToSearch.htm
