Am only just beginning my research but am stuck! I am tracing Mother's Mothers and have come stuck at 1758 with the birth of one of them. I do not know the precise date of birth and only know it is her because she lived long enough to appear on the 1841 census. I have the date of her marriage from Pallots Index which was in 1782 and I have her maiden name as Matthews. I also have her death. I am told by someone that she was Irish and came across on a sponsored boat as her father was a skipper. Dont know how true any of that is. Anyone have any idea as to what I can do to find out more about her??? Any help gratefully appreciated!!!

Hi Lynne, Her maiden name was MARY MATTHEWS. She married RICHARD ABRAHART (also recorded as ABREHART). Marriage was 20.10.1782 at St Peter, Cornhill, London Any suggestions would be fantastic! Best Jamie

Have you taken into account 1841 ages are rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0? On the marriage slip, Does it say Mary Matthews spinster or 's' ? (Just in case she is a widow. and Matthews s her married name.)

By the way, what is as 'sponsored boat'?

Hi Susan & Heather Thanks for your help. Mary was a spinster at her marriage. Her marriage was 1782 so i dont think I can get a proper marriage certificate for it. I have seen the handwritten record which simply records the names and date. I also checked the 1841 census and she wasnt born in County. I have been left with some information from a relative who did some previous research. She was of the opinion that her father was a skipper on a boat and he and his family were sponsored to come to England from Ireland. However I have no idea where this comes from. Best Jamie
