Hi, Could someone please explain which name I put in my tree. My 3 x gt grandfather was P Coin (this is the furthest back I've got on this line and the spelling is via census data only) His son was born F Coin (birth cert) and on the same son's 1st marriage (cert) he is F Roind, on his 2nd marriage (cert) he's F Coyne and his children because of accents and moving counties he has some children born in Staffordshire with the suname Coyne (certs/ baptism records) and others born in Derbyshire are Kind (baptism /Certs). I just don't know how to write in the family, do I use all the different variations as they arrise or just use the same name regardless? One daughter was baptised Kind but her birth & marriage she is a Coyne. Any advice is much appreciated, Lou

The advantage of using all the variations on GR, is that that gives you all those versions by which to snag matches in other people's trees. Generally speaking, I'm inclined to use their start-out name, though I think I may have failed in that on at least one occasion! Christine

Hi Christine, I know what you mean with regards to varients and this site, it's just so confusing to know which one to put, I had always gone with the thinking that what's written on the cert should be their actual surname, but with this family??!! I'm still confused, as it's taken me so long to find them in the first place because of the varients. Lou
