What part of the country? Were the children baptised? Could they have been registered under a different surname, either as they were illegitimate or their mother remarried? Have you found them in a census to see where they said they were born?

Hi Gwen I'm having a similar problem with my Simmons family in Camberwell. I read somewhere that if one of the children had not been registered chances are none of them would have been - which is not much help is it. You may have to work out from maps etc which are nearest churches and then plough through the parish records. It seemed to be the case that even after it became a legal requirement to register a birth (1870's?) many families either didn't know or didn't do it. But, some families seemed to believe that baptising their children was the same as registration so odds are you will find them in parish records. You can check if the LDS has the film of the parish registers of any churches in question and order them in - that will save visiting the record office if you're not local. If the LDS does not have them then come back on here and see if anyone either has CD or easy access to local records office. (My Camberwell lot are not at the local office and LDS do not have them on film so I will need to make a trip to Metropolitan Archives - I will keep my fingers crossed that you find yours!). It might be worth trawling FreeBMD for groups of children with your names in the area in question seeing if they were registered under a different name. Mum's maiden name or whatever if you know it. Or just comparing what surnames appear against which forenames - bit of a slow haul but might come up trumps if you have one or more unusual forename to check. Good Luck. Jill
