I have a birth OR christening date I am not sure which! It is in my grandmothers birthday book but I have no idea as to which area! It is for my grandfathers father. I do not have any siblings and I have no idea where they came from. Is there any way of searching records by date rather than place? The date I have is : 16 September 1842 for Henry Freeman. Any ideas anyone ? Thanks Joyce

According to FreeBMD, only three Henry Freemans were born in the last quarter of 1842: Births Dec 1842 (>99%) Freeman Henry Bromsgrove 18 212 Freeman Henry Bishop London 2 167 Freeman Henry John Lambeth 4 251 However, birth registration wasn't compulsory then, so he might not be any of them. The only way of finding out their exact dates of birth is to send off for the birth certificate. If you want to post all the details you have (especially your grandfather's name, year and place of birth), somebody can look for them on the censuses for you.

Thanks for all the replies folks. My grandmother,Annie Elizabeth Charnell came from Tamworth but she married my grandfather, Robert Henry Freeman in Chorlton cum Hardy Manchester in 1905. My gt grandfather Henry Freeman died in 1890 at Ryton on Tyne Durham which is where my grandfather was born. According to the 1881 census Henry Freeman put Oxfordshire for his place of birth but I have traced every Henry Freeman born there from 1841 to 1845 through the census's to 1891. Some kind people have also searched the Oxford parish records for me and cannot find him! I think he was born somewhere else and maybe lived in Oxfordshire as a small child and thought he was born there! Joyce x

I have my fathers birth certificate ... Robert Henry Freeman born March 1916 in Buckinghamshire. I have my grandfathers birth certificate ... Robert Henry Freeman born Aug 1877 at Ryton on Tyne . Both certificates are originals. Joyce P.S. I have found the family on 1881 census living at Ryton on Tyne .... that is the only record I have of gt grandfather. His age is 36, he obviously thought he was 3 years younger than he really was! I also have his death certificate in Feb 1890 at Ryton ... age 47

Somebody born in mid Sept might not have been registered until the following quarter, Oct - Dec. Have you tried looking there? Have you also considered looking for a baptism in the Parish Registers for Ryton?

Huia

Huia Report 27 Jul 2007 20:30

Did he have younger siblings who might have been registered? Have you looked for his parents in Ryton or in Oxfordshire on the 1841 census?

Joyce

Joyce Report 27 Jul 2007 20:39

I have looked in the Ryton parish records. I do not know the names of any brothers or sisters for Henry. All my fathers brothers & sisters were born 1873 onwards so the first census I have for any of them is 1881. I have traced them all on the 1891 & 1901. Henry died in 1890 so he does not appear on any later census. Joyce

Joyce, I'd almost lay bets on your Gt Grandfather being ROBERT Henry Freeman ... maybe that's why you can't find him. He may well have been 'known' as Henry en famille, but officially he could have been Robert. Regs Annie

Good thinking Annie... off I go to search all the Robert Freeman's now ! I will let you know how I get on ... I bet there are even more Roberts than Henrys !!! Cheers Joyce x
