I've spent the last 5 years searching for my gr grandfather's birth i have his marriage and death certs, marriage states him as Joseph Harry Warrington,Father Fred Warrington, death cert he's just Harry Warrington, he died in 1955 aged 56 married in1920 aged 21. with this i searched all bmd records page for page for each quarter for Warrington births from 1890-1905 incase he was iliterate and unsure of his age. and no record of his birth at all. I finally spoke with his youngest daughter 2 weeks ago and found out that he was actually born Joseph Harry Shirt??? his father was Fred Shirt and my great aunt remembers he was always Fred Shirt?? i have no idea or record as to why 'Harry' changed his name to Warrington, or claimed on his marriage cert that his father was a Warrington, i'm not sure if this name change was legal (deed poll) or just his own making. Deed Poll dont keep records of name changes. I finally managed to find his birth (now i knew what i was looking for) and have since found them on 1901 census however i'm unable to pin down Fred as a child and move further back. Can anyone help explain or were i can find out anything about this name change??

Did his mother remarry a Warrington and then he used that surname but knew his Dad was Fred so put that on his marriage certificate. Irene .

Hi Irene My great aunt can remember 'Harry's' parents Fred and Florence living near her when she was young, This was one of my first thoughts I also thought that it may have been Florence's (his mothers) maiden name however i believe Fred married Florence Wood. Martin

Mother could have been married before and her maiden name could still have been Warrington. Have you his birth cert yet that may give you a clue or witnesses on his wedding certificate. Good luck Irene

I'm awaiting Joseph Harry's birth cert at the moment but may be up to 3 weeks before it will arrive. i will keep you informed when this arrives, but you know how it is tomorrows always to far away when you get a link to follow, lol the witnesses on his marriage cert, i or my gr Aunt have never heard of them a Kay and Herbert?? these were not even linked to his wife?

Hi found this marriage would appear from this that Fred's parents were Thomas William Warrington and Sarah Emma Shirt. It would appear that Fred was illegitimate as he was born in 1877 and his parents didn't marry until 1880.
