There's nothing on the complete death index for either name between 1902 and 1906. Are you sure he died? There was quite a lot of bigamy at that time. Perhaps they just separated and his wife went on to marry again without bothering to get a divorce. Kath. x

If he didn't die before his wife's second marriage, then he could have lived right up to about 1980 ish, so you would have to keep trawling through the records for a lot of years yet. Kath. x

when was sons marriage and do you have the certificate? as fathers details would be on there (usually at least) and it would (usually) say under fathers name or occupation if he was deceased at time of marriage. R

Hopefully the 2nd marriage certificate of the wife would say whether she was a widow or a divorcee. Gwyn

It is my understanding that divorce was not an option for anyone in that day and age unless they were extremely wealthy. In which case it is almost inevitable that she will call herself a widow when she marries again. She certainly wouldn't call herself a bigamist! A case of needs must maybe. Victoria

I know exactly how you feel. I can't find the death certificate of my great grandmother. I know that her husband remarried in 1911 but have ploughed though the records lots of times and can't find her. Not helped by the fact that her name Elizabeth Wood is a fairly common name. Not sure where to go from here.

I'm just waiting for the 1911 census, Louise. See if that gives me any clues. Will keep my fingers crossed!

To Maggy from West Yorkshire. Your problem happened to me, my g-grandmother was said to have died when my grandmother was born in 1873 G-grandfather remarried in 1876, called himself a bachelor and I searched for years for a death of g-grandmother between 1873 and 1876, no luck. I did eventually find her on the 1881 census in a West Yorks asylum, she had been put in there in 1874 -6mnths after grandmother was born, one of the reasons given for her entry was anxiety. She died in there 20yrs later. She probably only had post natal depression, poor woman, but the Victorians didnt seem to know about that illness. So dont give up, your g-grandmother is out there somewhere.
