Sharon If your queries are related to genealogy then Tips and Records are the boards you need to use. As its name suggests, General is for unrelated matters. Most (not all) of those who post on General post only on that board. As someone said, things settle down and then start up again, but I'm afraid it is like that most of the time. It's plain for all to see that there are some who cause trouble for the sake of it....often those who mask their stirring with appeals for peace, and apologies for trouble caused previously. It's sometimes clear that their gentle, conciliatary words are really nothing more than an attempt to once again raise a contentious subject that has already calmed down. I rarely look at that board now and don't know any of the people on there, but even I can spot the trouble makers a mile off. This is really sad, as it could be such a good board if used in the manner it was intended for. However, there are some really nice people on there and occasionally there are some interesting and funny threads. As someone has said, just add to the ones that are of interest to you and ignore the ones that aren't. Amanda |

Sharon The General Board is to me just a light hearted interlude to use when I need a break from researching. Since joining this site 3ish years ago I have always looked in on the General Board and have had a 'laugh' reading and/or contributing to the light hearted threads posted. I have always managed to avoid the more contencious threads so only generally see the 'aftermath/fallout' posts and choose to stay well out of it :) I joined Genes as an aid to research my family history and therefore use both the Tips and Record Office Boards as my first point of call for either help or to give help. General.....I take or leave it depending on whether there is a post I am interested in contributing to. Chris |

Not everyone's bad on the General Board Sharon. There's just a small minority who like to spoil it for everyone else. |

I think you're right Scarlet, 'dont even go there' as my son would say, who by the way is only 18 and has more sense than a lot of the people on the general board i've seen! |

Sharon, try the records office board, too. We're all sane and sensible there. I've met some wonderful people on both tips and records office. Margaret |

I've only been using the tips board for a couple of months, everyone seems really helpfull, but as i, like many others, pay for the site i thought 'use all the resources' so i went to check out the general board thinking i may post a couple of queries....but most of the threads seem to be talking about arguments and general nastiness. I did read some of them and was astounded, i havnt heard such nonsense since i was at school, and i mean PRIMARY school. Have i just arrived at a bad time, is it worth bothering with the other boards or should i just steer well clear, which seems a shame on a pay to access site, dont GR have some rules or something that can stop the kind of thing i've just seen on the general board? |
