once i have found someone on the records how do i get to look at a birth or death cirtificate? do i have to contact the reg office

You have to buy the certificate, either from the GRO or the local registry office concerned, the volume and page numbers in the record make up whats called the GRO number, you also need to note the district, quarter of the year and the year x

If you are talking about England and Wales, you can't look at a certificate. You have to buy it first. If you have the GRO reference (with volume and page number) then you can order online for £7 from:- www.gro.gov.uk/content/certificates/ Kath. x

Are you using the Ancestry site to search? If not, others may be able to help. Some sites are very expensive and use up lots of credits. Gwyn

Have a look on Lancs Bmd there are some records for Preston. If you find the right one click on the reference number and you will find a certificate to download and print fill in the details and post it to the office concerened Bren
