Yes Sheila, his sister was born in England we have found out the name of the home where the baby was born and who ran the home. I have sent a couple of e-mails to the society that ran the unmarried mothers home, just awaiting replys. We have no idea what the childs full name was, the mother would never speak about the baby she gave up, and she made my brother-in-law promise he would not trace her till after she had died. Janet |

Hi Janet, Was she defiantly born in England or Wales ? just thinking if she was born in Scotland it would not show on Ancestry or find my past. Also do not forget it may not be in the same area that your BIL was born some mothers went away to family or mother and baby homes at this time to give birth away from prying neighbours. Do you have her actual birth name ? Sheila |

Hi My BM had also been adopted so could not find her birth registration under the name that was on my birth cert, so in your B-I-Laws case, if his grandmother was single when she was born her birth entry would be under the name Alexander, however, she was adopted when she was 3 and became McGoven therefore, if she went on to give birth to your B-I-Laws sister and she had not married at this time the birth entry would then be under the name McGoven. Thanks Gwyn The problem is that my brother-in-law's mum was also adopted when she was three years old in 1945. Her mother's Surname was Alexander her father Mutch and her adopted parents were McGoven. I have managed to find the birth of my brother-in-laws mother but struggling with his sister. She could have also used the name of the father on the birth certificate. I think I have a challenge on my hands with this one. Thanks again Janet |

The child should be registered with her natural birth mother's name shown on her certificate. If the child's father attended the registration, the child could have been registered in his surname....but unlikely in your case. Gwyn |

Please would anyone be able to help me. If a child was born in an unmarried mothers home in the early sixity's and was being put up for adoption would the mothers name go on the birth certificate or the adopted parents? I have tried to look up birth under the mothers name but had no luck. I am trying to help my brother-in-law trace his sister. Thanks Janet |
