I've been looking for my TUFT family on the 1851 census and came across this family who look like them but the name is totally wrong! It's a family of Swifts, from Ireland, same christian names I have in my family although I know that doesn't mean anything. My John Tuft was a dock labourer from Ireland. His wife Ann was also from Ireland. There is a son called John b. 1842 Ireland, Mary Ann b.1844 Ireland and a daughter Elizabeth b.1846 in Liverpool. Here they are on the 1851 census Name: John Swift Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1842 Relation: Son Father's Name: John Mother's Name: Ann Gender: Male Where born: Ireland Civil Parish: Liverpool Town: Liverpool County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View Image Registration district: Liverpool Sub-registration district: St Martin ED, institution, or vessel: 1ss Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 96 Household Members: Name Age James Farmer 26 Elen Handlen 40 John Handlen 25 Richd Handlen 30 Wm Mullhall 30 Ann Swift 36 Elzth Swift 5 Francis Swift 11 John Swift 38 John Swift 9 Mary Ann Swift 7 Are they mine? I've looked for this family on 1861 and can't find them. Maisy |

Maisy I presume you have found your Tufts in 1861? Could this be the Francis from that 'Swift' family in 1861? Francis Tuft Age: 22 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839 Relation: Cropers Crew (Crew) Gender: Male Where born: Newry, Ireland Civil Parish: Vessels Town: Beirut Syria County/Island: Royal Navy Country: England Registration district: Royal Navy Sub-registration district: Royal Navy ED, institution, or vessel: Queen Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 1 Angela (i.e. looks pretty likely that the Swifts are the Tufts to me!) |

A Francis Tuft born in Ireland also turns up in Liverpool on later censuses. I think they probably are your family. One of my families are called by a different name in 1881/1891, but I think that was their choice. Yours could be that reason, or maybe the enumerator misheard the name - a strong Irish accent maybe?
