hi all, my g,g,g,grandfather is giving me some trouble. i know he was born in Ireland around 1837, i have his marrige cert (1872) which tells me his father's name was ( i think) either Adain or Adam Fagan. However i can't find him on the 1871 census, so am i to assume that he came to england between the 1871 census and his marriage in 1872, or is there a way to find when he came to England and/or his birth certificate. in the other census' for him i'm finding it difficult to read place of birth. 1881-lewey/leivey, 1891-Ireland, 1901-Newry? PLEASE HELP. Leanne

Help us to help you - if you can give your relative's name and approx date of birth and the place where you think he might be, we can have a look on the census for you. Jan

Civil registration for births did not commence until 1864 in Ireland. There are some interesting sites to be explored, if you google for newry genealogy fagan including http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/~donaghmore1/deeds/f.html http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/F/Fegan.htm (please delete brackets)

By the way, Newry is partly in County Down and partly in County Armagh. You might find this site useful, too: http://www.irish-roots.net/armagh.asp
