I find Legacy extremely good and easy to use. Started with the free version downloadable from their website and have just updated to deluxe for about £15 to get a few more bells and whistles! Christine |

Hi Margaret. This same question pops up every few weeks or so. Everybody will tell you that the program they use is the best, that's because they are used to it and know how to use it. As far as I am aware there are 37 different programs out there, some are free, some you pay for. The only way to reach a conclusion is for you to try them for yourself and see what you like. As already stated a lot of people use Family Tree Maker, it is the most popular software world wide but that does not mean it's the best, the best program is the one that does what you want it to do and only you know that. Try this website for comaprison table that will tell you the features of some of the main programs. http://www.my-history*co*uk/acatalog/compare.htm Replace stars with a dot Most programs have a free downloadable version so that you can give it a test drive. PAF from the latter day saints has had a lot of support on this board over the last month and it is free. It has a few add ons you can but for under £5.0 each. Personally use RootsMagic but PAF for family members (so when they phone for help I can have the same screen as them). I like RootsMagic but I paid about £20 for it. My family is able to use PAF (most of the time) which says something as they need help with Word and Excel. Clive |

I have family tree maker and it is good in that lots of people use it so you can get plenty of help in its use; but if I bought another programme I would go for Family Historian this time (its British) and has less Americanisms in it. Why not download a few trial versions and see which one you like best? Cheers, Horatia |

A lot of people on this site (myself included) use FamilyTreeMaker. You only need the basic package as most people don't find all the extra CD's and things that come with the deluxe versions any great help. It's very good and easy to use, but there are free programmes you can download. Kath. x |

I need to buy a computer based genealogy programme but would like comments you may have as to which I should look at Margaret |
