As posted above, Joseph's marriage is on the IGI. Some but not all of the children are included on the IGI baptism records too. It may be possible to view the film of the parish records through a local LDS research centre. Have you checked to locate your nearest one? http://www.lds.org.uk/family_history_search.php?type=FHC Pete |

Thelma, Have you seen the census entries for the family, the 1851 is posted above. From there it may be possible to track the baptism records for some or all of the children. Certainly, St John's is available online on the pay to view website familyhistoryonline. (It's a dot net site). I think you can get quite a lot for a £5 payment. Check out the GENUKI website for Hampshire for local information. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HAM/ and also see: http://www.hants.gov.uk/record-office/index.html for details of the record office in Winchester. |

Thank you all so much for helping much appreciated. I live nowhere near Winchester, as I want to reach further back, is it possible to obtain items from Parish records by post? If so what do I have to be able to tell them. I know I may seem a bit slow but it does take a bit of getting to grips with. Once again many thanks. Thelma |

The information you have posted tallies with the baptism data in the Hampshire Baptisms database on the familyhistoryonline website. St John Thomas S of Joseph & Ann Thomas baptised 3 Jul 1840 at Winchester St Maurice. St John THOMAS is also found with his parents and siblings in the 1841 and 1851 census. His birth may not have been registered (as pointed out previously). If his baptism occurred in July 1840 he could have been born in Qtr 1 or Qtr 2 of 1840. Even if his parents did register his birth it may occur in Qtr 3 of 1840. Or of course, it may not be there at all. If it is his mother's maiden name that you are hoping to learn you could consider obtaining the birth certificate for a younger sibling, assuming that they are registered. Have you seen the baptism entry in the parish records, it may give his actual date of birth as well as his baptism date. Pete |

Registration began in 1837 but was not compulsory until 1875 so you might find the birth was not registered. |
