Hi l have tried googling and getting nowhere fast l have a rellie who on the census's says she was born Rochester Lancashire but l cannot find anything out about the place l would like to know areas in Rochester so l can see if anyone has her Clegg family on the name search Can anyone help please Pam

Hi Pete Thats what l thought too but on google theres a few mentions of the place but nothing to tell anything about it or areas!! lt mentions Gracieland which l assume refers to Gracie Fields l'm totally stumped Pam

What is her name? Which census have you found her in? Is the place of birth consistent over the census years? Pete

Ahhh Deb You may have the link my rellie Maria Clegg was married in Prestwich!! l wonder if the name of the avenue is where she was actually born!! They have Oldham as their address no street nothing just Oldham on the 1839 marriage cert She is such a mystery l was hoping to get further back on her and her husbands side Thanks Debs Regards Pam

Hi Ken Thank you. lt must be Rochdale then. Hi Pete Maria and husband John Tipping are in Cadwick St Liverpool on the 1841 census name as Tippin l always understood her birthplace as Rochdale then someone else said Rochester l'm confused Pam Forgot to add Maria died 1869

could it be a mistranscription and be Ribchester Lancs

The image of the 1851 census for Maria TIPPING clearly has her place of birth as Lancashire, Rochdale. Despite this, Ancestry have misread and have it in their database as Rochester. Class: HO107; Piece: 2176; Folio: 715; Page: 41
