Hi Just got my first PR cd this morning, was having a little look and found a marriage i need, was taking the info down and noticed one of the 2 wits a Josh Hughes was on several more marriages as a witness??? Do you think he probably work there or was a popular Guy!! Pamx

there were some 'professional ' witnesses. If it was a small wedding and there were no witnesses then the vicar would call on people he knew ,possibly connected to the church like the verger etc, to act as witness. I have several marriages where the same unrelated witness was recorded on the parish records

Surname Fahse. Germany. Essex .South East London My avatar is one of our wedding photos of 1957

Often someone who worked for the church - like a church warden - would be a witness for several marriages. I have seen the same person as a witness on every wedding in a parish for a whole month. Kath. x

Thanks all, thought i was seeing things being new to the cd. What made me worry more is that his surname Hughes is the same as the married couples sons wife 20 years later. Thought i was going daft.. Thanks Pamx

Several of my certs have same name as witness, looked into the Census for the time, and found this person's occupation was Parish Clerk. so that gave me the answer. Think all these marriages were 'shot gun' and parents and rellies did not attend.
