Hi, My great great grandfather was a Banksman Pit Top! Does anyone out there know what this was, and what it involved doing? Many thanks, Teresa. |

When you are a lorry driver, your banksman is the one who helps you back out of places to avoid accidents. So at a coal mine he must be some kind of safety person. |

When you are operating a Crane the Banksman is the Man on the ground giving directions. There is a code of hand signals like Swing left, swing right, lower slowly, lift etc. Often the hook is out of sight of the Crane Driver so he has to rely on his Banksman's signals. Jim |
