A hawker is a peddlar or Street seller who carries his wares with him, so I would say a coal seller does that. Lynda |

On my ggrandfather's marriage certificate (1882) his father's occupation is given as 'Hawker'. However, looking for a George PAYNE in the Wellingborough area on the 1881 census someone of the right age and name etc. is listed as a 'Coal Dealer'. The census and the marriage are only one year apart. Do you think a coal dealer might be described as a hawker? |
