I have just started doing my Dad's side of the family tree and have quizzed him for all the information he knows. Unfortunately, it doesn't amount to much and I don't know how or where to start. My Grandad (my Dad's dad) is still alive but unfortunately, he is now very confused and can't help with the information I need. My Dad says that my Grandad is one of about 7 children but he thinks my Grandad is the only one still living. I have sent off for my Grandad's birth certificate so I know his parents names but can't even begin to guess when they married as I don't whether my Grandad was the first child or the last or what - so I can't even narrow it down to the marriage being round the time of his birth in 1919. Can anyone help? Ideas or information of any sort would be great. The information I have is my Grandad was born in 1919 (John Casey). His Mother was Mary Ann Flannaghan (we think from Ireland) and his father was Frank Casey (from Lancashire). They definitely married.

The best place to start, would be a LDS centre. They have all the GRO indices which you can search through for free, and they have the Ireland ones too, if you need them. For your nearest centre, look in the phone book under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Andrea WHy not find your grandad's birth certificate? This will tell you the name of his father and mother usually with her maiden name and also father's occupation. You can buy birth certificates online at 1837online. Alison

Thanks for the help. I think the 1901 census is going to be the best place to start as I can't find anything on FreeBMD or 1881 LDS site. Alison, I have already got my Grandad's certificate - that is how I have found out his parent's names but as I don't know which of the 7 children my Grandad is, I am struggling to guess at a year for their marriage. I will see if I can turn anything up from 1901. Thanks again for your help.

Andrea The parents marrige date should be on the birth certificate. It will have both parents names including the maiden name. The date under that should be the marriage date. Mary

Thanks to everyone for your help on this. Mary, I have got my Grandad's birth certificate but you don't get the parents' marriage date on birth certificates, only their full names (including maiden names). Thanks for trying to help though. Georgina, thanks for looking on 1901 for me. I have possible names for 5 of the 7 kids but only 2 match the names you have for this VERY full household (!!!) Maybe this lot will fit in somewhere along the line, but the names don't ring any bells so far. Could you possibly give me the address where you found this lot living? The Casey family that I am looking for seem to have lived in Belthorn, which can be classed as Blackburn, Over Darwen, Darwen, Haslingden or Oswaldtwistle from experience so far (just to make things more complicated for me!) I have done a quick search on 1901 myself (without paying) just to see if I can find any possibilities and nothing seems to match place and job or age and job or name and job etc etc!! I guess I will just have to pay and check all the ones with the right name and hope for a hit somewhere along the way!! Thanks again everyone.
