According to Allan, if you are "steamboats" you have drunk too much alcohol, so presumably a "steamboat stoker" is someone in the process of getting very, very drunk. Jan

Jackie Definitely as Margaret says. My Grandad was a stoker on the submarines. Come to think of it an ex boyfriend was a stoker in the Navy too. Jeanette

STOKER A person who tends the fire of an engine boiler.

Hi Jackie, I would guess that he would be the person who would put the coal into the whaterever it is to give the steamboat its energy. You've heard of stoke the fire! Regards Margaret
